In the middle of 19th century, Pondicherry mission was an important place for the French M. E. P missionaries where the education to the girls was viewed as a curse to the family as well as to the country. At this juncture, to promote the education of women and to nurture their dignity, a synod of priests was held in 1844 and proposed the congregation of indigenous sisters should be started with the responsibility of imparting education to women. This noble and tremendous task was entrusted in the hands of Rev. Fr. Louis Savinien Dupuis MEP, who willingly accepted to launch in the vast ocean.
Being a man of deep faith in the Divine Providence, a man of understanding and a man of vision, with strenuous efforts he started the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at the Cathedral of Pondicherry on 16th of October 1844. There was a team of four sisters. The pioneering work was accompanied by various problems. In spite of all these problems, he never failed to concentrate his attention in the spirituality of the sisters and in the quality of their service. He inculcated in them genuine piety, simple way of life, zeal for the education of women, love and concern for the poor girls, sense of responsibility and accountability. After thirty years of his leadership as Founder and Director to the Congregation, he was called by the Almighty for his eternal reward on the 4th of June 1874.
The charism of the congregation is being restored to the original inspiration of the Founder with Immaculate Spirituality by sending his daughters throughout the world to spread the fragrance of his commitment for the growth of the congregation with 1035 sisters, 184 communities and 265 institutions in 8 countries. The congregation continues its journey towards greater witness and selfless service to women.
